Globally you have two different types of insecticides: systemic and contact insecticides. The systemic ones are best in my opinion because the plant absorbs the substance and any sucking creatures die. Contact insecticides work only when the bugs come in contact with the insecticide. And then usually only certain stages of the bug die. For example only eggs and larvae and the adults are not affected.
