Dracaena draco (Dragon Tree) is an ancient tree species now only found in the wild at the Canary Islands. Some specimen are believed to have an age of around 600 years. Dracaena draco can reach amazing heights of 10-12 meters. However, it grows rather slow. The name “Dragon Tree” is derived from the red color of the resin (Dragon’s Blood) which flows out of the stem or leaves of the plant when you cut it.
Cultivation of Dracaena draco is usually done by seeds. To germinate Dragon Tree seeds and to transplant seedlings and plants the same soil mix is used. Make sure the mix has good drainage and contains slow releasing organic fertilizer like Worm Manure. Seeds germinate in 1-6 months. This species germinates in the light so do not cover the seeds with grit or coarse sand. The best germination temperatures are around 28 °C. Seedlings and older Dracaena plants need warm temperatures in summer and good watering. Make sure the temperatures never get below freezing in Winter because these plants are not hardy.
