The Orchidaceae, one of the largest plant families on the planet. A good guess is that the Orchid family contains around 24.000 species within over 875 families. According to the Genera Orchidacearum, a study at Orchid classification conducted at the Royal Botanic Gardens, The Orchid group is divided in five different subfamilies: Apostasioideae, Cypripedioideae, Orchidoideae, Vanilloideae and Epidendroideae. There are monopodial orchids and sympodial orchids. The monopodial plants have no rhizome and can potentially grow indeterminate. The Vandas are a good example of monopodial orchids. The sympodial plants do have a rhizome from which new shoots sprout. Many sympodials have so-called pseudobulbs in which food reserves and water is stored. A second and important classification is the location where Orchids grow. We know epiphytes which grow on trees without extracting nutrients from the tree (in contrary to parasitic plants). The second type grows in soil and are called terrestrial Orchids. The Orchidaceae are wide spread and can be found on every continent except Antarctica.
