Both Aztekium hintonii and Aztekium ritteri are one of the slowest growing cacti on earth. They have small flat rounded bodies with a tap root. Flowers are pink/white and the fruits which appear are very small. Aztekium plants can be found on stony, slate slopes in Mexico (Nuevo Leon). In cultivation use a mineral soil, almost pure pumice, and maintain a minum temperature of about 10 °C.
